Sister Mary Manga, OSF

August 30, 1933 - December 14, 2016

Sister Mary Manga (formerly Sister Callista) died on December 14, 2016, at Vincentian Home in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was 83 and in her 65th year of religious life.

Sister Mary was born in 1933 in Tarentum, Pa., as one of six children of Joseph and Mary (Durian) Manga. A graduate of Mount Assisi Academy in Pittsburgh, Sister professed first vows in 1951. For 24 years she taught elementary grades in the Pennsylvania towns of McKees Rocks, Ellsworth, Perryopolis and Charleroi, as well as in Clifton, N.J. She went on to teach the sciences, algebra and German at St. Francis Academy in San Antonio, Texas, for 19 years.

Sister is remembered as being intelligent, humble, kind, cheerful, a loyal friend and a gentle soul. She loved nature, ice cream and the traditions of the church. During her later years in religious life, Sister Mary resided at Marian Hall Personal Care Home at Mount Assisi and then transferred to Vincentian Home.

In addition to her parents, Sister Mary was preceded in death by her sisters, Elizabeth Manga and Irene Lucas, and her brother, Joseph Manga. Besides her religious community, Sister Mary is survived by her brothers, Robert and John Manga, and nieces and nephews.

Sister Mary is buried in St. Francis Cemetery at Mt. Assisi Place in Pittsburgh, Pa.
