Sister Genevieve Mary Jurick

Sister Genevieve Mary Jurick, formerly Sister Assumpta, died on February 26, 2017, at Marian Hall Home in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was 95 and in her 76th year of religious life.

Sister entered the community from Holy Rosary Parish in Clarksburg, W.Va. in 1938 and professed her first vows in 1940 at Mount Assisi Convent in Pittsburgh, Pa. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Mount Mercy College (Carlow University) and a master’s degree in guidance counseling from Duquesne University. 

Sister Genevieve Mary taught the elementary grades in various schools in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts; high school level at Monongahela Valley Catholic in Charleroi, Pa.; tutoring at Mount Assisi Academy in Pittsburgh, Pa.; and was a guidance counselor at Notre Dame High School in Clarksburg, W.Va. 

Sister ministered as a staff aide at the Benedictine Adult Day Care in Pittsburgh, Pa. and was on staff at Marian Hall Home. Her last 11 years of life were spent as a resident of Marian Hall Home as a faithful participant in the prayer ministry.

She had a knack for reaching young people with encouragement and smiles. She was very dedicated to her community and family and spent years caring for her mother and sister. Later on, she enjoyed working with the elderly. Sister is remembered as kind and caring with a deep sense of gratitude and a gentle spirit. She was an inspiration to those around her.

Sister Genevieve Mary was preceded in death by her parents, John Joseph and Mary (Krisak) Jurick; brothers Joseph, Jay and John; and sisters Regina Ann and Mary Louise. She is survived by her religious community, her sister Bernadette Marie Jurick (Fairmont), brother Andrew Jurick (Berkeley Springs), sister-in-law Margaret (Chesapeake, Va.), and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.   

Sister is buried at St. Francis Cemetery at Mount Assisi Convent in Pittsburgh, Pa.
