Sister Mary Manga, OSF

Sister Mary Manga (formerly Sister Callista), a member of the School Sisters of St. Francis United States Province and in her 65th year of profession, died on December 14, 2016, at Vincentian Home in Pittsburgh, Pa. She was 83.

Sister Mary was born in 1933 in Tarentum, Pa., to Joseph and Mary (Durian) Manga and was one of six children. Sister Mary entered the community in 1950 and professed her first vows in 1951 at Mount Assisi Convent Chapel in Pittsburgh, Pa. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in biology from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas.

Sister Mary taught the elementary grades in various schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. She also taught at St. Francis Academy in San Antonio, Texas, and served as chairperson for the Science Department.

During her later years in religious life, Sister Mary resided at Marian Hall Personal Care Home at Mount Assisi and then transferred to Vincentian Nursing Home.

In addition to her parents, Sister Mary was preceded in death by her sisters, Elizabeth Manga and Irene Lucas, and her brother, Joseph Manga. Besides her religious community, Sister Mary is survived by her brothers, Robert and John Manga, and nieces and nephews.

Sister is buried in St. Francis Cemetery at Mount Assisi Convent in Pittsburgh, Pa.
